Journey to the Heart of Troodos
Visit the heart and treasure of Cyprus – Troodos Mountains and Kykkos Monastery. Even if you are not interested in the religious history of the island, you will get a lot of new experiences, taste the local wine and admire the stunning scenery.
Most of our trip will pass through the picturesque Troodos mountain range, famous for its magnificent green forests and clean mountain air. At the foot of the mountains, among vineyards, lies Omodos village. We will walk through its narrow cobbled streets and visit Timios Stavros Monastery, which is famous for containing a piece of the Holy Cross and Rope.
Also, we will drive through the mountain picturesque villages of Pedoulas and Prodromos. Near these beautiful villages is situated the famous Kykkos Monastery. Founded in the 11th century, the monastery is considered to be one of the wealthiest and most ornate monasteries on the island. The Kykkos Monastery is home to several important religious artefacts, the main of each is the icon of the Virgin Mary which is said to have miraculous power. Legend has it that the icon was painted by St. Luke during his lifetime. Visitors to the Kykkos Monastery can also enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the monastery’s terrace. The area is covered in lush forests and beautiful flora, making it a perfect place for a peaceful and relaxing stroll.
Another important landmark in the Troodos Mountains is the Tomb of Archbishop Makarios. The tomb is located on Mount Throni, which overlooks the Kykkos Monastery. The height of Throni is 1,318 meters. The Kykkos Monastery is located on the slope of this mountain at an altitude of 1,140 meters. The tomb of Archbishop Makarios, at his request, is located in the area between the Kykkos Monastery and the Throni of Panagia Kykkou, offering a beautiful view of the whole of Cyprus. The Archbishop, during his lifetime, gave specific instructions to the architect Andreas Philippus regarding the tomb and the surrounding area. This Tomb is the final resting place of Cyprus’ first president and is an important pilgrimage site for many Cypriots.
We will also stop at the winery, where you can taste Commandaria and Zivania, among other local wines.
Omodos is a picturesque village located in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus. The village is known for its traditional architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming village square, which is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops.
We will visit the island’s richest and most famous monastery, Kikkos Monastery. Here one of the miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary is kept, which is said to have been painted by St Luke during her lifetime.
The Tomb of Archbishop Makarios III is an important historical and cultural site in Cyprus and serves as a reminder of the Archbishop’s legacy and contributions to the country. It is also a symbol of the strong connection between religion and politics in Cyprus, a theme that has played an important role in the country’s history.
Stavros restaurant is A Cypriot traditional restaurant that serves authentic Cypriot cuisine in a casual and welcoming atmosphere with interior of a typical Cypriot tavern.
Lambouri wines are made from local grape varieties grown in the best grape region of the island, zone A, on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountains.
