Paphos – the ancient capital under UNESCO protection
In this private tour, you will get acquainted with the ancient capital of Cyprus, a city filled with stories and legends. In 2017, Paphos took on the honor of becoming the European Capital of Culture.
Paphos is a small town on Cyprus’s western coast, with a rich ancient history that still permeates the city. Legends about the gods and the heroic deeds of warriors are immortalised in unique mosaic works. Paphos is divided into two areas: Pano-Paphos (Upper Town) and Kato-Paphos (Lower Town).
Our first stop is Kolossi Castle, which is situated not far from Limassol in the village of Kolossi. The history of the village is closely tied to the name of the English King Richard the Lionheart and the Knights Templar. It received its name thanks to Count Garino de Colossu, a French nobleman who owned it in the late 12th century. In 1210, King Hugh I of Cyprus transferred Kolossi to the Order of the Knights Hospitallers. The Hospitallers built Kolossi Castle, one of the most prominent examples of medieval defensive architecture in Cyprus.
On the way to Paphos, our next stop is the famous Birthplace of Aphrodite, which has been listed as one of the twenty most romantic places on the planet. You will hear the legend and see the place where the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, came ashore from the foam of the sea.
Then we head to the center of old Paphos, to the Catacombs of St. Solomon. Hidden beneath the streets of Kato Paphos lies a labyrinthine underworld steeped in mystery and ancient tales. Known as the Agia Solomoni catacombs, this fascinating archaeological site invites curious souls to explore its enigmatic depths. At the entrance to the catacombs, there stands an old, sprawling pistachio tree adorned with pieces of fabric. Believers tie them to the sacred tree, hoping for healing from their ailments. Afterwards, we take a walk to the church of St. Kyriaki. The place where the temple was built is associated with the name of the Apostle Paul. According to legend, at the column, which has survived here to this day, the Saint was flogged.
Next, we head to the heart of Paphos – Archaeological Park. The Archaeological Park is an amazing outdoor museum that’s packed with unique ancient treasures. Imagine walking through this park and discovering relics from a long time ago. This park is special because it’s recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Within its huge 80-hectare area, you can explore buildings from different times and civilizations. Here, we will visit the house of Dionysus mosaics, which tells about the life of the ancient Greek gods. In your free time, you can stroll along the promenade overlooking the Paphos Castle, go shopping for local souvenirs, or enjoy lunch in a cozy traditional tavern with excellent fish and seafood.
