The city of Famagusta, rich in history, hides a lot of interesting things and requires a detailed study. Explore the Othello Castle, located in the heart of the old town. The castle was built in the 14th century by the Lusignan dynasty and named after Shakespeare’s famous play. Admire the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, a Notre Dame de Paris-inspired medieval church that was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman era. The church is an impressive example of Gothic architecture. Walk on top of the historic defensive wall that surrounds the old city and enjoy panoramic views of the city and surroundings.
And of course, dive into the centuries, overlooking the ancient city of Salamis. According to legend, the founder of Salamis was Tevser, who is mentioned by Homer in his Iliad. In ancient times, Salamis was the largest city in Cyprus. Also enjoy the panoramic view of the infamous “ghost town” – the “Varosha” area, the exclusion zone as a result of the tragic events in the history of Cyprus.
